It became apparent in the early days of rebranding the business that we were going to have to get creative with our programming at Edge of the Avalon Inn. Visitors to our province were looking to have an authentic, cultural experience. When they are visiting a place that is known for its storytelling traditions, artistic creativity, and a vibrant, eclectic music scene, that’s what they’re expecting.

So over the last three years we have put our creativity hats on and reached out to our own community members first. Thus was born our local hiking excursions with storyteller Tony Power and our infamous Screech In’s with Herb and Marion Sutton. Not to mention the local musicians that pop up to play a song or a tune at the drop of a hat. All of these experiences leave our guests smiling at  the “time” they’ve experienced around da bay.

It’s no secret that this area is known for its music with kitchen parties being the heart of that. Last year we built a summer concert series around this tradition. We welcomed such talented artists last year and will do so again this summer with a concert series taking place on Fridays, all summer long. In order to pull this off though we had to get inventive. Where there is funding out there for community groups to attract performers there is no such thing for small businesses available at the moment. Our solution to this problem was to approach each of the artists on a business to business basis, and this is how it looked.

We provide two rooms for the performers along with dinner and breakfast, marketing and social media support, a small PA, and a travel stipend. They in turn get to use our gorgeous dining room as their venue for the evening and charge what they wish for tickets to the show. The concerts this year are set at a great value of $15 per person with all proceeds going directly to the artists from all tickets sold. It’s an intimate venue with a view of Trepassey harbour that will take your breath away.

The calibre of these performances are world class. Here’s this years line up for Music at The Edge:

June 28th Fine Lads

July 5th The Culchies, Trevor Halleran & Mike Foley

July 12th Jeremy Dicks

July 19th Karla Pilgrim and Jackie Sullivan

July 26th Sandy Morris and Jamie Dart

August 2nd Shanda Hopkins

August 9th The Relic’s

August 16th Katie Barbour-Reddy

August 23rd Jackie Sullivan CD Release

August 30th Labour Day Fest TBA

Sept 6th Ronnie Power and Guest

Getting creative like this has been beneficial for all parties to get a quality product out in the market, as well as showcasing the talent we have here on the Rock. For our guests it really adds to the feel good moments that turn vacations into memories.

For us at #TheEdge it means that when we say #wesupportthearts it’s not just a random hashtag. We are walking the walk and we’re sure proud to do so here on the bottom of the Irish Loop. Don’t just drive through; stay awhile. You’ll be glad you did.

Contact the Performers below to book your advance tickets. Limited seating. Ticket’s at door if they aren’t sold out. Reservations recommended for the dining room. Shows start at 7:30 and run until 9:00 pm. Thanks to all of you, for helping us, support the arts. #weallsupportthearts

The Southern Avalon is a part of the Irish Loop that is just begging to be explored. There are so many hidden coves, beaches, and trails to discover in our wee communities here on the bottom of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Trepassey is located on the mid way point of the Loop, and is a mere 2 hour drive from the capital city of St. John’s. Here are just a few of the things on the go that we have in store for you this season.

Hiking ~ We have many local trails that are great for those that want a guided hike or those that like to step out and see where their feet take them.

Unesco World Heritage, Mistaken Point Fossils Hike Guided tour leaves daily from Portugal Cove South from the Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre at 1:00. Visit fossils that are over 565 million years old and let your guides teach you about local culture, customs, wildlife, and the plants of the region. This is a 2.5 hour moderate hike. There is no access to the fossils unless you are pre-booked for this guided hike by calling (709) 438-1011.

Tales and Trails Hiking with local story teller Tony Power

Tuesdays at The Inn ~ All summer long Tony will weave his stories at the Inn for our guests while they enjoy their food and the views from the comfort of our dining room. The fee for this is $10 per person with all proceeds going to our storyteller. Starts at 7:00 pm

Thursday Community Hike. Join Tony in the evenings during the summer for a moderate hike at dusk as he weaves tales about our local folklore, historical facts about the area, as well as learning about our native flora and fauna throughout various locations in our communities. $25/person $40/couple $45/family. Starts at 6:30pm

Day Hike New this year Tony Power will be doing a longer day hike, once a month, in June, July, August, and September for the more experienced hiker. Locations include St. Shott’s to Cape Pine to explore the most southerly tip of Newfoundland and Labrador. July will see them go out to St. Vincent’s to view the whales and hike out to Cape English. In August the hike will start in Trepassey and end up in Biscay Bay, the perfect spot to go for a swim in the Atlantic after your hike (or at least to dip your toes and say you did!). Lastly there will be an excursion from Cape Race to Clam Cove in September. All of these will include a beach boil up and transportation back to the trail head with Trails Edge Tours. Keep your eyes on our facebook page for more details on this exciting new addition to our local storytelling experience.

Get off the Beaten Path Step right outside our doors and explore on your own. We have a trail system leading into cabin country or head up the road to take a nice walk around Fanny’s Pond. This path will lead you ocean side to Trepassey’s bar beach with a chance to have a seat in our colourful Adirondack chairs or bring a picnic and spread it out on the seaside table on site.

Beach Combing is another good way to pass the time while you take in the fresh, salt water air, to clear those cobwebs away. With beaches at The Drook, Portugal Cove South, Biscay Bay, Trepassey, St. Shott’s, Peter’s River and St. Vincent’s you won’t have to look far to start your exploring.

Fishing ~ We have some of the best salmon rivers in the province located at the Northwest and Northeast rivers, as well as a licenced river in Biscay Bay. During trout season you can bring along your fishing poles, find a pond, and try your luck at trouting. Our chef would be delighted to cook it up your catch for you as well.

Water Fun ~ Biscay Bay is home to a nice salt water fed swimming area that is shallow enough for children to frolic in and warm enough to at least dip your toes in the Atlantic (and say you did!). We have a protected harbour here in Trepassey and docking is available for boaters.

Kayaks are available to our guests for a fee, and are launched off of a sheltered and shallow beach front.

Live Music ~ We love supporting local musicians and storytellers here at #TheEdge. All summer long we will have live music events featuring some of the best that this province has to offer. We have an open mic policy here at Edge of the Avalon Inn that encourages our visitors, if they can sing a song or play a tune, to do so. Don’t be shy! We want to hear what you’ve got.

Wildlife and Bird Watching ~ Trepassey is home to an abundance of wildlife. Moose and caribou can be spotted on occasion in the area. Over the past few years we have seen a growing interest in bird watching (birding) as well. There are a variety of species of birds, some quite rare, which visit the area. Whales, seals, otters, and more can often be spotted frolicking in our waters. In June/July every year whales, including species such as Minke and Humpbacks, can be viewed from the shoreline in St. Vincent’s which is a short drive away from us.

Lighthouses ~ When you think of the east coast, the lighthouse is one of the quintessential images that comes to mind. In these parts we have three for you, and all within an hours drive of each other; we quite literally will always have a light on for all of you that visit our coastlines. Cape Race, the site that the Titanic distress signal was received, is located about 30 minutes from Portugal Cove South. Powles Head is Trepassey’s own lighthouse and is located on the Lower Coast. Cape Pine, a national historic site, can be found near the quaint village of St. Shott’s and is about a 45 minute drive from the Inn.

Quad Excursions with Trails Edge Tours ~ If you’re looking to enhance your trip with an exciting and engaging tour, consider an adventure with Trail’s Edge Tours. Virginia and Gary McNeil are a husband and wife team (also known as a “bayman” and a “townie”) who truly enjoy living in Trepassey and sharing the incredible beauty of the area with others. Check out their tour, look at pictures from the tour route, and feel free to get in touch with any questions by visiting https://www.trailsedgetours.com/. They would love to hear from you via email at: trailsedgetours@hotmail.com

Screech In Ceremony ~ Become an honorary Newfoundlander as Herb and Marion Sutton work together to create an entertaining and fun experience that may or may not include kissing a cod. Cost $20 per person and comes with a certificate and some priceless memories. To book contact info@edgeoftheavaloninn.com or phone 1-800-439-2934.

You can also chose to do absolutely nothing but unwind & relax while you stay with us at Edge of the Avalon Inn & Restaurant. That is the beauty of being on vacation …. or should we say baycation!

Get in touch with us so we can plan your next trip around the bay. We do large group bookings and multiple night discounts as well. Plus, continental breakfast is on us this season. So many reasons to explore our shores this year here on the Irish Loop.

In 2018 we humbly accepted the CBDC Tourism Business of the Year award in recognition for the contribution we have made to our industry in the province. We were in shock, then and now still, while also still being so appreciative of the recognition we received from our peers. We fully admit that there is still more work to done here in our hometown of Trepassey and for the region. As an organization we are committed to doing our best to showcase what all those that are from here have known since the beginning; this is God’s country. There is something so wild and untapped about this place and we want to share it with all those that walk through our doors.

Moving forward into this years plans we want to continue fostering relationships with keen and driven partners to create memorable experiences for all those visiting us on the Irish Loop. “The Loop” is more than just a drive, it is in fact a destination, and one with so many secrets to discover. This includes showcasing the artists in the area with their gifts of storytelling, crafting, and music. Music is a big part of the culture here of that there is no doubt. We can’t wait to share all of the talent that is in our own backyard, along with welcoming some traveling minstrels as well. New this year will be our artists in residence program that will see us working on a business to business model with the creators from the province. We would like to become a hub for the arts and look forward to creating some working partnerships with the artistic community in both the province and abroad.

Working with our locals to develop interactive experiences that highlight the folklore and historical moments that we have here in abundance is such a pleasure. We are laying the foundation so that there will be something to do seven days a week here on #TheEdge throughout the summer. Herb and Marion Sutton have become a fixture at the Inn and their screech-in ceremonies are becoming well known throughout the province. Tony Power will be back with us this year to spin tales both out in the community via a guided hike and at the Inn for a more intimate storytelling experience. Good food can elevate any adventure whilst one is traveling. This season we will continue to feed our guests well while also celebrating the historical connections to the area, including our 5 course Titanic fine dining experience.

Our team will be heading out to this years Hospitality NL conference in Gander to continue to do our best to represent our region, while also looking to strengthen partnerships with other passionate members in our industry. In the meantime we will never forget all those who have helped support us along the way, believing in our vision when we were just doing what we do, day in and day out, in the life of an Innkeeper.

This business isn’t for the faint of heart which is why we often say that it takes a village to raise an Inn, and by the by it’s the truth. Our staff are the backbone and the heart of the business and we have been blessed to work with some of the kindest and hardest working folks we could ask for over the years. Now we never said we knew what we were doing at the start of this journey but whatever we are doing seems to be getting it done. Onwards and upwards here on the Edge of the Avalon.

Thanks for all your support,

The Devereaux clan

Edge of the Avalon Inn

We are pleased to officially announce our new brand, Edge of the Avalon Inn.

Trepassey Motel and Restaurant has had a rich history. It was established in 1980 and over the years has become a well-known fixture on the Southern Shore. It’s been a Nurse’s station, a Bed and Breakfast, and eventually transformed into a Motel and a Restaurant. What’s always been constant is the high level of customer service, and the memories that many people have taken with them of Trepassey. This is what we intend to build upon.

Edge of the Avalon Inn Brochure

Edge of the Avalon Inn Brochure

Our goal is to build a product that will continue to draw tourists and travellers to Trepassey and the area. There will be a variety of activities to choose from including scenic walks along the cliffs at Mistaken Point, bike riding and leisurely strolls around the town, salmon fishing, spa escapes, ATV exploring, and much more. There is plenty to discover here and so much peace and tranquility for those looking to escape the grinds of city life.

Regarding branding, we have re-positioned, re-themed and re-branded as the ‘Edge of the Avalon Inn – Life Begins at the Sea’. We seek to capitalize on the iconic value of Mistaken Point and the brand name value of the word ‘Avalon’ and linkage to the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, should such designation occur.

Remodelling began during the Summer of 2015, when customers saw the introduction of Earhart’s Pub, which offers a variety of wines and spirits, and features draught beer from Quidi Vidi Brewery in St.John’s. This Pub will showcase live local entertainment at key times during the year, and includes a large screen HD display for showcasing key sporting events. The property will have a variety of travel options to choose from. Initially we will be offering 12 rooms, all totally redecorated and renovated. Some rooms will offer jacuzzi suites, private deck, family space, while others will serve the needs of travelling couples, with one and two bed options. Another addition will be that of a high tech conference room. This will provide options for corporate functions or events.

We strongly feel that the foregoing vision is at the right level of thinking and development for the property and its location. The snapshots you see provide a glimpse of what we hope to accomplish with regards to our Inn design. The goal here is to maximize the fabulous views of Trepassey harbour. These changes will not happen overnight, our goal being to have all complete for the start of the 2017 season.
